Inspired and Intentional Business Podcast - Open Book Management, Business Vision, Employee Engagement, Balancing Profit and Social Impact

In the United States, according to Gallup, nearly 70% of employees are not engaged in their work. Disengagement negatively affects profitability and productivity. I believe there are 3 ways businesses can improve engagement. One, they inspire with a clear vision. Two, they practice open-book management. Three, they intentionally build collaborative, accountable, strength-focused teams. My intention is to inspire owners considering a new way to run their business and to encourage those currently fighting the good fight to balance profits and social impact. Let’s be inspired. The show will touch on business strategy, vision, internal communication, finance, accounting, organizational development, team-building, marketing, sales, and operations. Inspirations for the show include The Great Game of Business, by Jack Stack; Zingermans Community of Businesses, Ari Weinzweig, Paul Saginaw, Small Giants by Bo Burlingham, Open Book Managment by John Case, Zappos, and others.

Welcome back, this is our last part with Cindy Stein, Greene County Missouri Auditor. She’ll talk about vision for the Great Game of Government and how everyone plays a role in determining the direction of their organizations, whether in government or business.

Social Media Shareables:

“My vision is that this would spread to all local, state and federal governments.”

“If someone believes in the mission, they can influence others, including leadership to join the cause of open-book management.”

“I would not be here talking with you if it weren’t for by Great Game Coach, Rhonda Alexander.”

Questions

  1. What can you do to help bring this to your local government?
  2. Long-term engagement is tough. The county government plays a variety of games to keep them engaged. In addition, Cindy shared that they come up a focus for the year. For example, learn all the different kinds of government funds. What game themes and areas of focus could help inspire your team to keep focused on the critical numbers?

Challenge:

If you’re in government or want to help your local government get a better handle on their/your finances, present this last series of episodes to them. I have no financial stake in the matter, perhaps  you should give the Great Game a call to get some ideas going.

Right now, I’m hyper focused on increasing the number of subscribers to the show. This will help how this shows up on iTunes, making it easier for entrepreneurs, leaders in business and government find the show. There’s currently not a way to see how many subscribers are on iTunes, however, when we reach an average of 200 downloads per episode, I’ll have a drawing for book on this topic. Welcome to part 2 with Cindy Stein, Greene County Missouri Auditor since 1994.

We’ll continue our conversation with Cindy today about how the Great Game of Business is being implemented in the Greene County Government.

Social Friendly Shareables:

“Are your employees bringing solutions to the organization’s problems?”

“Moody’s cites Open Book Management as one of the reason’s Greene County has come out of it’s economic troubles.”

“It’s not the leadership, it’s the Greene County employees that got us to a better place financially.”

“Not only did we improve cash balance, but we also had 18 pages of efficiency improvements.”

“Getting fully engaged employees involved in projections helps expedite the budgeting process.”

Questions

  1. “Are your employees bringing solutions to the organization’s problems?”
  2. Cash balance is the critical number Greene County focused on for the first couple of years. Entrepreneurs, what is your number that is critical to your survival and ultimately growth? What departmental/division critical numbers do you have that can tie into a bigger critical number?
    1. Should you come up with this number or your team?
  3. Cindy speaks a lot about projections and how it helps stave off problems and helps expedite the budgeting process. How can you engage employees to project the numbers that are critical to your business?
    1. How would this improve your finances and budgeting?
  4. How can the leadership of the company understand how they fit into the bigger goals of the organization? Could something like HIPS or High Level Planning Sessions help?

The best place to share your answers is on the comments section on the blog at http://inspiredandintentional.com/episode23. You will also find links to the resources mentioned.

Before we get started, I want to remind you of the drawing we’re having this week. (Of course many of you will be listening to this after the fact, sorry, it’s both the magic and curse of podcasting.) Anyway,  James Lehman, my previous guest offered up an opportunity for one listener to take a free Energy Leadership Index Assessment and phone evaluation with James after he receives the results. I found out it has a value of $419. I am still accepting entries until midnight March 5th. Go to inspiredandintentional.com/energy to register for the drawing.

I’m excited to begin a new 3 part series with Cindy Stein.

Cindy S. Stein, Certified Public Accountant and a graduate from Missouri State University.

Cindy began her career with a local public accounting firm and remained there until her election to Greene County Auditor in 1994.

We’ll be talking with Cindy today about how the Great Game of Business is being implemented in the Greene County Government. Greene County is in Southwest Missouri, the largest town being Springfield. Many of you have heard of Branson, it’s just North of them.

Tweetables - “It’s about the employees and the foundation they have developed and the culture they help foster.”

“We’re not questioning the person. We’re questioning the number.”

Questions for part 1 with Cindy Stein.

  1. What area of your government could use a dose of open-book management?
  2. Could you implement open-book management before a crisis arises?
  3. It’s about the employees and the culture they help foster. Is this true for your government?

Remember, James Lehman, my previous guest offered up an opportunity for one listener to take a free Energy Leadership Index Assessment and phone evaluation with James after he receives the results. I found out it has a value of $419. I am still accepting entries until midnight March 5th. Go to inspiredandintentional.com/energy to register for the drawing.

I’ve been asking for reviews of the podcast. While this is still important, my new call to action for listeners and readers is subscribe to the podcast in iTunes or Stitcher. A couple weeks ago I mentioned that I would have a drawing when I reached 100 subscribers. This isn’t an easy number to get at this point. Instead, my critical number will be when my episodes average 100 downloads. Right now, they’re at 51. When they hit an average of 200, I’ll have a drawing for a book on this topic.

If you’re not subscribed, I’ll provide a link in the show notes or you can go to http://inspiredandintentional.com/episode22 and you may click the link. James Lehman, Award-Winning Author, Speaker, Workshop Leader, and a Life & Career Transition Coach,  changes it up a bit and we discuss his book and what he’s focused on right now. It’s a slight diversion from the main topic of Inspired and Intentional business. However, it is about self management of your career which does align with employee accountability and engagement in their own career.

Maneuvering Your Career, Career Transition, Unemployment, career change, professional coach, Human Resources Transformation, James K Lehman
Maneuvering Your Career, Career Transition, Unemployment, career change, professional coach, Human Resources Transformation, James K Lehman

This 4th and first Thursday episode James will cover:

  • Creating a career plan like a business plan.
  • Why managing your career will become even more important in the “gig” economy.

[powerpress]

Questions for this episode:

As a leader, how could you take the topics about career management and help your team take more command of their careers? Would this help your company?

If you’re undergoing a career transition, what could you do to take  control over your career so you can find a place of meaning and purpose?

Perhaps coaching could help. With that in mind, James offered up an opportunity for one listener to take a free Energy Leadership assessment with an evaluation with James after he receives the results. I will accept entries during the next two weeks, from February 23rd to midnight March 5th. Go to inspiredandintentional.com/energy to register for the drawing.

Thank you so much for listening/reading and until next time, be inspired and intentional.

James K. Lehman is an Award-Winning Author, Speaker, Workshop Leader, and a Life & Career Transition Coach. After starting his career as a CPA, he transitioned into consulting, and then HR, focusing on HR Transformation.

James is the author of "Maneuvering Your Career - 20 Strategies to Prepare You for Voluntary (or Involuntary) Career Transition."  He is a SPHR, a Certified Professional Coach, and Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner.  He also serves on the International Association for Human Resource Information Management (IHRIM) Board of Directors .

Podcast worldview:

Gallup says 70% of US employees are disengaged from their work. This causes, what Ari Weinzweig calls an energy crisis in the workplace. Lost innovation, productivity and profits. Not to mention the tolls on the communities.

There are companies and organizations working to improve this. they are creating more open and collaborative work environments. They are realizing that treating people with dignity and providing meaningful work can be done while also running a financially solid organization.

My hope with this podcast is to inspire leaders, entrepreneurs,  and those coming into leadership through transition, to make intentional choices to balance profit and social impact.

[powerpress]

In this episode, James Lehman talks about

  • Organizational Development basics and how it applies to organizations of all sizes.
  • The importance of employee engagement.
  • Creativity, Innovation, and Ideas - the biggest fear of some managers?

[powerpress]

Questions for you to consider:

  1. James spoke about HR keeping the C-Level leadership accountable to the behavior reflecting the company values and culture. Do you allow your people to keep you accountable to your core values or will you hold it against them? Do they know they have this freedom?
  2. How are you showing up daily to your people?
  3. As crazy as it sounds, James suggests that some leadership may be intimidated by new ideas because it could lead to problems or failures. Are you truly open to new ideas and experimentation?

Feb 2, 2016

We conclude our conversation with Anne-Claire Broughton. She is Principal of Broughton Consulting, LLC, Durham, NC. Her many publications include the Business Action Guide Series of innovative employee engagement practices (with The Hitachi Foundation). Anne-Claire is active with efforts to educate retiring business owners and their advisors about the possibility of employee ownership as an exit strategy. She also shares innovative employee engagement practices to help business owners thrive. In addition, she is President of EarthShare North Carolina’s Board of Directors, an active amateur musician, and parent of a teenager.

Some of the insights we’ll hear:

  • Seeing employees as a fixed cost vs a variable cost.
  • What are companies doing to differentiate themselves from the business as usual crowd.
  • The importance of training the culture of the company, not just the hard skills.

Questions

Anne-Claire shares several practices of leaders who are running business differently:

Careful hiring

Extensive (intentional) training

Setting up career ladders/paths and promoting from within

Clearly communicating core values and using them as a guide to action

Smart incentive systems that align to the interests of the organization and the employees

Transparency and Open-Book management

Which one of these could you consider to begin using to move your organization forward?

Are you ready to consider your employees as a fixed cost vs a variable cost? If not what parts of this principle could you consider for your business?

How could you begin training your team on your culture?

What books will you assign to your team to read to begin the move forward?

Where’s your heart on this issue?

I would love to see your answers to these questions. You can leave them in the comments on this episodes page at inspiredandintentional.com/episode17, on Twitter @toddareed, LinkedIn @ToddAReed, or on Facebook, search for the Inspired and Intentional page.

Gallup reports 70% of employees are disengaged from their work. This leads to high and expensive turnover, poor productivity, and what Ari Weinzweig calls an energy crisis in the workplace. There are companies and organizations out there bucking this trend. By talking with these inspiring leaders, the goal of the Inspired and Intentional podcast is to help you know that you’re not alone. There are others that, not only, want to run a financially solid organization, but  also one that intentionally inspires those on their team and in their community to significance and purpose.

  • What is open book management vs open book reporting?
  • A “radical” approach that will encourage employees to share their ideas.

Questions

What are your “butts in the seats”? What is your key/critical/one number?

I'm excited to continue with my conversation with Matthew Bodary, Account Manager for Zingerman’s Coffee Company.

This week Matthew we’ll cover topics like

    • Employee training
    • Visioning
    • Meetings
    • What is employee engagement?

1. Is your training given context? Is it explained why it’s there, what it’s about? Is it organized and easily tracked so they and their team know where they are in the training cycle?

2. Visioning - Are you and your people very clear on what success looks like in  your organization?

3. Meetings - are your’s focused, everyone prepared, expected roles, set agendas, starting on time, and have clear objectives?

4. Engagement - He said, “Picturing yourself sharing in the creation of something special.”- Again with the clear vision, where your organization is going and what it will look like. Can your team see that, understand, and see how they fit into that and what role they can contribute to be part of something bigger than themselves?

I would love to see your answers at one of the many Inspired and Intentional outlets:

This week Matthew we’ll cover topics like improving the customer experience, finding meaningful success measurements, and measuring things like workplace energy.

1. Are your people looking for ways to delight/improve the experience of customers, especially those everyday customers? Do you have a system to encourage this? What could you do to change this?

2. “I think it’s important, in some way, to see measurable affects of your work.” Matthew uses the analogy of putting and being able to see immediate results of your putting. And how important that is in improving your game. Things to check if they are impacting the bottom line in a positive way.

Things go measure:

Sales

Coffee Quality -

Effects of new systems implemented

Waste generated - compost (There is an example given in something I read where a dishwasher commented on how many fries he threw away. The Roadhouse lowered the portions, while offering free refills. There was a marked lowering of costs.)

He then talks about tying some of the gainsharing monetary reward to both profit and hitting some of these other measures.

What are some other areas you could measure within your business to improve your bottom line, profits, and employee engagement?

3.  He spoke about the Department Operating Report with measures like

How can you include your team to determine meaningful measurements? What way can you get them involved in the tracking and reporting of the results?

4. Another measure, energy. “You’re either contributing or detracting from the workplace energy.”

3 Types of energy

Physical

Mental/Emotional

Vibrational (How you’re appearing to others.)

What could you measure that would improve the overall vibe of your workplace?
