Inspired and Intentional Business Podcast - Open Book Management, Business Vision, Employee Engagement, Balancing Profit and Social Impact

In the United States, according to Gallup, nearly 70% of employees are not engaged in their work. Disengagement negatively affects profitability and productivity. I believe there are 3 ways businesses can improve engagement. One, they inspire with a clear vision. Two, they practice open-book management. Three, they intentionally build collaborative, accountable, strength-focused teams. My intention is to inspire owners considering a new way to run their business and to encourage those currently fighting the good fight to balance profits and social impact. Let’s be inspired. The show will touch on business strategy, vision, internal communication, finance, accounting, organizational development, team-building, marketing, sales, and operations. Inspirations for the show include The Great Game of Business, by Jack Stack; Zingermans Community of Businesses, Ari Weinzweig, Paul Saginaw, Small Giants by Bo Burlingham, Open Book Managment by John Case, Zappos, and others.

It’s the day after Xmas and all through the office, not a creature is stirring, not even a boss…

Anyway, I’m not going to rewrite the entire story to fit my podcast, but I did wan to take this Tuesday, following Christmas and the next, following New Years to reflect and look forward.

This week, I’m thinking about mindfulness and your team. In the context of culture and work: mindfulness basically means that you look inward and with intention bring your best self to your work and interactions.

How can transparency transform you and your organization? Could it help you become a “healing organization”? And it’s been said, I think a million times, how important a clear purpose is for your journey and the health of your organization. In this news update let’s look at (hear) a few things that caught my attention and you may find inspiring as you look to move your company to one that is able to balance profit and the human side of your business.

This content is also going to be in my newsletter that I send out very infrequently because of time and I get so many emails. I’m trying to stay out of your inbox as much as possible. Saying that, please join the email community list. Also, if you want more interactive interactions, go and join the Inspired and Intentional Business Podcast group on Facebook. D

When Ron was interviewing with Zingerman’s he wanted to do more than just accounting. He wanted a place where he could make a difference. In addition, he wanted to respect his coworkers. He found that at the Zingerman’s community of businesses.

This is part one with Ron Mauer, Managing Partner, Zingerman’s Service Network. The Service Network is a centralized business unit designed to facilitate business functions in a more streamlined version than each Zingerman’s company could possibly do on their own.

How your organization interviews and recruits has a direct impact on your culture and also future engagement. Here are a few things that stood out to Ron while he interviewed with Zingerman’s:

Paul and Ari were involved and knew their businesses deeply.

They were around the business a lot.

They interviewed in the business and not in some off-site locations or behind closed doors (i.e. very open).

They were fun loving and humorous and didn’t take themselves too seriously.

How they were open and honest during the negotiations.

How is your hiring process reinforcing or hurting your culture and engagement?

First a shout out to a listener…my mother, Connie. She listens sporadically to the show, but she tuned into my episodes with Scott and they really grabbed her attention. She was so excited what Scott is doing that she shared with her local family owned restaurant (I think they might be there everyday) the story of what Scott’s doing. They then got her into contact with their distributor who really caught on to Scott’s vision for creating work for those living with disabilities and they have now brought his wine into their area, a new market for Scott and 100% wine. So cool.

Scott was one of my first guests that I asked what challenge the world could help him with and finding new markets was one of them. Who knew it would be my mom spurring that on! That’s why you put the challenge out there.

Anyway, let’s listen to the full episode with Scott Monette, Founder of 100% Wine, a company dedicated to giving 100% of profits to organizations that are creating meaningful work for the 53 Million Americans living with disabilities. In addition, we’ll hear his thoughts on being a B Corporation.

Be inspired that you can create a business that is driven by a strong calling or purpose.

Spent a few minutes with Valentina Silva, Communications Specialist at the Zingerman's Service Network, to get an employee's perspective of the Zingerman's Community of Businesses.

The hiring process - pay attention and care
She’s working harder than she ever has, yet loves it more than any job she’s had.
Creating uplifting open workplaces are good for society. Let’s not downplay it.

In the first episode we learned that Kieron Hales, Managing Partner of Cornman Farms, is multi-talented and is moved to creating a family. He intentionally looks to garner the input of his team through lean and open book practices. This week we look at the results of this inspiration and intentionality. The biggest lesson, he didn’t know anything when he started and failure is the best way to move the company forward.

In part one with Ji Hye Kim, Managing Partner and founder of the new Zingerman’s Korean restaurant, Miss Kim we learned about her origin story coming to the US at 13 to being a new managing partner and founder of Zingerman’s newest restaurant.

In this episode we’ll look at what intentional actions she’s taken to bring the Zingerman’s ethos to life in a new venture. In her case, Visioning (something she once viewed as new-agey or just some warm and fuzzy), Bottom Line Change, Open Book Management, and Servant Leadership.

What’s interesting and what I would like you to hear from this set of interviews is their heart. The consistencies of the stories. The consistency I got from editing this set of episodes with Ji Hye Kim, managing partner of Miss Kim, was an institutional heart for the worth of people.

This is part 1 of 3.

Chris Dimock, Co-Founder of Elation, had tried conventional wisdom in running his business and was getting average results. He says, "I was running a normal company." He thought there must be a better way. After talking with another local business person, he had a humbling experience because he realized that the results were related more with HOW he thought than some kind of simple behavior change.
