Inspired and Intentional Business Podcast - Open Book Management, Business Vision, Employee Engagement, Balancing Profit and Social Impact

In the United States, according to Gallup, nearly 70% of employees are not engaged in their work. Disengagement negatively affects profitability and productivity. I believe there are 3 ways businesses can improve engagement. One, they inspire with a clear vision. Two, they practice open-book management. Three, they intentionally build collaborative, accountable, strength-focused teams. My intention is to inspire owners considering a new way to run their business and to encourage those currently fighting the good fight to balance profits and social impact. Let’s be inspired. The show will touch on business strategy, vision, internal communication, finance, accounting, organizational development, team-building, marketing, sales, and operations. Inspirations for the show include The Great Game of Business, by Jack Stack; Zingermans Community of Businesses, Ari Weinzweig, Paul Saginaw, Small Giants by Bo Burlingham, Open Book Managment by John Case, Zappos, and others.

In part one with Ji Hye Kim, Managing Partner and founder of the new Zingerman’s Korean restaurant, Miss Kim we learned about her origin story coming to the US at 13 to being a new managing partner and founder of Zingerman’s newest restaurant.

In this episode we’ll look at what intentional actions she’s taken to bring the Zingerman’s ethos to life in a new venture. In her case, Visioning (something she once viewed as new-agey or just some warm and fuzzy), Bottom Line Change, Open Book Management, and Servant Leadership.

What’s interesting and what I would like you to hear from this set of interviews is their heart. The consistencies of the stories. The consistency I got from editing this set of episodes with Ji Hye Kim, managing partner of Miss Kim, was an institutional heart for the worth of people.

This is part 1 of 3.

My conversation with Scott opened my eyes to my own discriminations and to a need to bring meaningful work to the 53 Million Americans living with disabilities.

Chris Dimock, Co-Founder of Elation, had tried conventional wisdom in running his business and was getting average results. He says, "I was running a normal company." He thought there must be a better way. After talking with another local business person, he had a humbling experience because he realized that the results were related more with HOW he thought than some kind of simple behavior change.
