Inspired and Intentional Business Podcast - Open Book Management, Business Vision, Employee Engagement, Balancing Profit and Social Impact

In the United States, according to Gallup, nearly 70% of employees are not engaged in their work. Disengagement negatively affects profitability and productivity. I believe there are 3 ways businesses can improve engagement. One, they inspire with a clear vision. Two, they practice open-book management. Three, they intentionally build collaborative, accountable, strength-focused teams. My intention is to inspire owners considering a new way to run their business and to encourage those currently fighting the good fight to balance profits and social impact. Let’s be inspired. The show will touch on business strategy, vision, internal communication, finance, accounting, organizational development, team-building, marketing, sales, and operations. Inspirations for the show include The Great Game of Business, by Jack Stack; Zingermans Community of Businesses, Ari Weinzweig, Paul Saginaw, Small Giants by Bo Burlingham, Open Book Managment by John Case, Zappos, and others.

Kathryn Wagner is a recent graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Marketing. She joined Zingerman’s Coffee House 5 months prior to our interview. After typing up that title for the blog/podcast, I felt kind of guilty because I only partially buy-in to the labels we give the different generations. There are characteristics. However, Kathryn in no way was here to represent a generation. She was asked 5 minutes before we interviewed to chat with me and she said yes. That all said, I did bring up the "M" word to get her thoughts on the matter.

Questions and Reflections - http://inspiredandintentional.com/episode47

As with most of the people I meet at Zingerman's, she's thoughtful, insightful, and an absolute pleasure to speak with.

I also thought during her and many other interviews that I don't want to overwhelm you with Zingerman's people. This team they have there is so nice and the systems/culture they have in place is something special. But it's not perfect and it's not necessarily the end-all-be-all. I share these stories to inspire you that there is another way. What, from what they're sharing can you adapt, not adopt to your business?

Questions.

Does your interview process allow you to represent your company as your really are? Does your interview process allow the candidates allow them to be themselves?

This is not something you can fake - but do candidates feel welcome when they’re in for their interviews?

Would you allow a 5 month employee to represent your company to the “media” without prep or practice?

You have the ability to “make it right” with a customer. Do you give your people this ability?

Are you providing opportunities for millennials?

Is your company compassionate with your people? Do you care?

Notes

Quote - 10 minutes - What’s really going on at Zingerman’s? Oh, people believe in you.

Systems and Culture Gap - Need to look this up.

It doesn’t really matter how the employee feels. There’s no emphasis on why the product is great. You don’t really know why you’re supposed to be selling something.

We talk Millennials. “I don’t want to pour myself into something and then leave, just to leave.”

Making it right doesn’t cost money. The mistake is what cost the company money.

Perspective on Open Book Management - there’s nothing to hide. There are no secrets. “There’s no uneasiness on what the numbers might be, you know what they are.”

How does OBM, Open Book Management, affect her day-to-day job? She’s in charge of social media and it helps her connect what is happening in the sales side of things to help her decisions on what to promote.

One suggestion for someone in a position where the company isn’t in alignment with your values. Perhaps start with personal vision, your passions, and caring for yourself.

Diving into the principles of servant leadership with the ZingTrain crew. When I think of servant leadership I think humility, and putting the organization first, the team second and the individual (myself) third. Therefore, when I will look for ways to serve those around me before I consider my needs.

I won't always succeed, but if I intentionally pursue this line of thought, I should be a better asset to the organization than if I were strictly thinking of myself first.

Take some good notes and enjoy:

ZingTrain has graciously allowed me to replay their webinars on my channel. I've collected 16 of them into a series of deep dive business lessons. This is part two of series 1 on the broad topic of Visioning and Leadership. This gets into the specific topic of managing ourselves to be good leaders. Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 10.49.31 PM

I've found in my discussions with leaders in the area of inspired and intentional organizations, self-reflection and starting with ourselves is a big part of creating a more human culture.

Enjoy.

This is my repodcast with Amy Emberling, Managing Partner of Zingerman’s Bakehouse and Candy Manufactory.

Amy Emberling, Managing Partner of Zingerman’s Bakehouse, has been an avid food lover and baker since her childhood in Nova Scotia, Canada where she often treated friends to after-school concoctions. She grew up in a family business and always hoped to have her own business one day.

In addition to her work at the Bakehouse, Amy also teaches seminars for ZingTrain in two seminars: Leading with Zing and Bottom Line Training. She is also one of the partners of Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory (with Charlie Frank), which was developed in the bakery.

In this episode we talk a bit about:

Letting systems help during those times when your people aren’t at their best.
Finding and hiring the right kind of people.
One way of defining success for each member of your team.
Training systems
Culture and pulling dissenting opinions to make the team stronger.
Having the difficult conversations.
Keeping excitement and focus for a long term vision.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation
A process for nurturing change within your organizationSuccession planning and what keeps Amy inspired to keep improving

This is the first in a series of 16 ZingTrain webinar replays. They've been kind enough to give me permission to present these on the channel and I've curated 16 of the episodes into 4 distinct series that will help you change and intentionally create an inspiring culture.

This one covers mindfulness.

The group at ZingTrain were kind enough to give me permission to share episodes from their free webinar series. I've collected a few into 4 areas of business.

Series one is based on getting a good start with Visioning and Leadership. Begin with yourself by understanding the concept of mindfulness and self management. Learn the importance of being a servant leader. And then move onto creating a vision you and your team can believe in.

Once you have a vision you can move onto series 2 and begin to work on building the team around you to reach those goals. Here you learn how to tune up your team so they operate at full capacity. Once they're running you learn how to effectively measure their success with performance reviews. Because change is constant you will learn how to undertake bottom-line change.

In order for your team to work independently and fully engaged in how the company generates cash and runs profitably, you will deep deep dive into Open Book Management, or OBM. You'll learn what it is. Then you will learn how to make the concept of tracking numbers fun by playing games. After running OBM for a while, the ZingTrain crew share the lessons they've learned. Some years you will struggle hitting those targets. If so, listen to FIVE FANTASTIC TIPS TO MEET YOUR ANNUAL TARGETS.

You're in a perfect state of zen, have a great team, and are operating with open book management like no one's business. How do you handle the growth? They've got you covered with series 4. Instead of necessarily growing your core business, why not start a community of businesses? Who's going to run all these new businesses? Why not create a system to make employees owners and the processes used to accomplish this?

Here's the entire library of free webinars you can find at ZingTrain's site.

When you click the links below you will be directed to each webinar's specific page where you will find the audio files, the slides, and many other resources. The amount of material available for each webinar varies.

This is a rebroadcast, or is that repodcast, of my entire chat with Cindy Stein, Greene County Missouri Auditor.

In this election season, and frankly a season of discontent and anger over government, I felt it important to look at one way of bring trust back to government. Opening up books and being more transparent should be the default of all government, but sadly it's not and we've let it become that way.

But Cindy shows that there is another way and that it can work.
