Enterprise social networks, user interface, performance management, and human centered design. These are all topics Kevin Jone and I discuss in this 3rd and final episode with him.
Kevin Jones works with companies to help them reimagine and change the way they work, operate, and how they engage their employees. The only way to do this is to challenge the status quo.
Kevin is an advisor, international speaker, and videographer, his expertise lies in organizational strategy, Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs), initiative adoption, and bringing the best out of employees. He focuses on the human side of business and technology. Kevin’s clients include NASA, Lowes, JCPenny, Dell, and many other well known companies. He’s authored two e-books, and produces videos that help communicate how we can challenge the status quo.
Questions
What technology could you implement that would improve the communication between teams at your company?
Do you really need to be doing everything you’re doing? Are there policies or traditional activities that could be dropped? What could you do to free up time to begin redesigning your workplace?
Are your employee surveys designed for the employees or managers?
What can you do to bubble up ideas for a new culture at your company?

Q- we do things that keep us busy - cut it and need to trim it.
Traditional ways are working for you right now. But how can it be better?
User Interface and User Experience - how could you use design principles to alter the way your work is done? How your organization is structured?
How can you look at your performance management processes differently
Human centered design.

In part 2 of my series with Kevin Jones, I asked for details on his company viaPing and the work he’s doing around employee feedback. We’ve all seen the yearly, or in one case every 3 year, employee feedback surveys. We take them and very rarely see any results or actions taken as a result. Kevin’s thought of another method that he’s helped companies implement and it’s called viaPing and it’s a methodology of daily employee feedback. Yes, daily.
This talk is not just about his company it’s about loosening up control, giving employees more room to take chances, and creating opportunities for conversations to begin among all levels and departments of your company.
Kevin Jones works with companies to help them reimagine and change the way they work, operate, and how they engage their employees. The only way to do this is to challenge the status quo.

Questions -
How can you create communication methods so people who don’t know each other to meet and share ideas to create solutions?
Like the invoicing team at the consultants, what departments could start asking questions to the users to improve how they operate?

Q 2423 We don’t care what our employees think.
Engagement and employee feedback can be more effective if it’s more grassroots.
Employee feedback should be more often than once a year. It should also be shared with each other to begin conversations.
Don’t assume management needs to solve the problems. Create something insourced management - let it come from the bottom/inside up.
Employee feedback needs to be the beginning of the conversation.
Be more open and let employees know the obstacles to change.
Initiative Adoption - how do you get your teams to adopt initiatives?
One thing - does it align with how your team works?
With a robust employee feedback mechanism, you may see better adoption of new initiatives because they come from the people they affect and not from “on high”.

Kevin Jones is the featured guest for the next 3 episodes. In this episode we talk about:
Working through the balance of technology and human side of business and how we cap employees potential.
Even though we have the best intentions employees are still disengaged.
The importance of designing our business for the employees not just the customers.
And one “simple” solution that can help move your organization to more collaboration and engagement.

Questions
Are your company processes, structure, and culture truly aligned to relinquish some control to allow your team to be more agile?
Do your employees understand the why of their work? The purpose?
What can you do to design your work so that you enable employees to give their best to provide the best product for the cusotmers?

Notes Taken During Editing
Technology’s advanced but how we design our work hasn’t advanced as much.
Are humans in the workplace just resources simply to be managed?
We’re marginalizing our people and capping their potential because of how we design our work.
Do you want to move beyond corporate zombies and tap into the potential of your employees? Listen here.
How often are you shooting down the ideas of your team members without consideration for validity.
Employee Capping example: Senior leader who is so busy that he doesn’t have the time to respond to the feedback, so people stop providing feedback, next time he asked.
Is your company set up to put caps on people?
Employees, do you want to love your work?
Engagement is more of a personal thing. Does the employee understand the why of their work? The purpose?
The culture is how we work together. The unsaid things. How we interact. How things get done.
1420 Cost of disengagement and bad culture: mediocrity.
When starting a company we design it for customers. At some point, we need to also think how we design our company for the employees.
Q 2100+- Design to enable employees to give their best to provide the best product for the cusotmers.
Change means change in the company structure and processes as much as in people.
Change can come from a scary yet simple solution: give up some control.
Do you want your company to be more agile? Release some control and let your people be more agile.

No Question this week - simply buy Shawn's book, Optimistic Workplace and start working on the worksheets and questions he created at the back.
Notes taken during the editing of the show
Optimistic Workplace came about because of a terrible experience at a “Great Place to Work”.
Pay for classes that didn’t apply directly to their job.
“We’re not here to help people self-actualize.”
Who out there are creating great workplaces and how are they doing it.
Studs Terkel - Read him. “Often times our work is violent, to our spirit.”
You can continue to have a violent workplace or you can do something to make a more optimistic workplace. You don’t have to stay stuck there.
Management needs to evolve. Leadership and Stewardship. “Management” is about control and monitor and manipulate. People want to connect, want purpose, want freedom to get the job done, to be responsible. “Management” should steward and take care of the people and create an environment of success and creativity.
Not just people first. Purpose, meaningful work, and Extraordinary people to create an amazing work environment. The three work together as the origins of optimism.
Bob Chapman says that he’s yet to find someone disagree with him that “Everybody Matters”. What he does struggle to find, is the people willing to follow through and make the changes necessary to move the needle on human workplaces.
Somebody has to go first in creating a workplace where everybody matters. And they’re not sure what to do.
Shawn has created tools at the end of his book to help people, especially middle managers.
Optimism planner - 90 days. Personal values, meeting designs to get people on the same page on an optimistic workplace.
One on One format. Optimism One on Ones. Focus on work progress. Purpose and values alignment.
Are your managers, managers or stewards? What can you do to help this to change in your workplace?
Not a question: get his book and try those exercises at the end of the book. I don’t make any money from these purchases.

Unleash The Unlimited Potential of Your Team, Shawn Murphy, Part 2
Questions
Does your company have a set of values that all know to help them be on the same page on how you're going to succeed as a company?
Does your team feel free to contribute ideas?
Switch and Shift - what does the “human side of business” mean?
Notes taken during the editing of the episode
They’re employees are spread out all over the country.
Discussion of how Switch and Shift’s story might help my wife as she structures her business to be family friendly.
Gig economy - flexibility to go where the work is and to help a variety of people who are also working on your gigs.
What is be be do at Switch and Shift. Instead of the normal core values they decided to create this saying as driving values behind their company. Be inspirational. (You know I like that one.) Be Heretical. Do Good. Their guiding principles.
They shape their intentions and decisions. They are also upgrading their values as the company has grown and they believe they need to be more defined and universal.
Lots of companies have financial success without thinking about all this human worth stuff. So why think about it? You remove the lid on performance and make it unlimited. Lift the lid on your team’s potential. People will contribute more when they are valued and allowed to be creative.
Is all this just an attempt by The Man to stick it to employees to get more out of them without more pay or more benefits?
If we and our people are spending so much time at work, shouldn’t we create an atmosphere of positive vibes, solid productivity, and mindfulness about the work being done. You want them inspired so they are open when the cool ideas come at those off work times.
Is this all just a first world problem? No matter where you are in the world, you are working and you want to do something that is meaningful and contributes to a greater many and not just to a few.

Is there a way to look at your work as purpose and not so much transactional?
What is your work climate?
Notes Taken during the editing.
[powerpress]
Work can be a source of joy. Working for a paycheck is transactional. What is it that you’re doing that is meaningful to you and purposeful to others? Don’t focus on joy directly. You focus on the things that help that feeling emerge. Knowing your work has meaning usually brings joy.
Meaningful work means you're getting something from the work being done.
Meaning - you get the satisfaction of doing the work for yourself.
You can find purpose in any kind of work.
Find purpose in what you’re doing and move from the transaction.
Company culture vs Company Climate
Company Culture - How things get done around an organization. Also the basic assumptions how the organization works.
Netflix - don’t have limits on vacation time and don’t have a policy on travel expenses. Assumption is made that people can be trusted.
This is why culture is so challenging to change. Because, often they’re based on deeper seated assumptions on human behavior and interaction.
Climate is what it’s like to work somewhere. (Hay group?) More influenced by someone’s immediate leader. How your leader shows up at work.
70% of the work experience is determined on your direct management experience.
Great company culture is not a millennial thing, but a human thing. However, 71% of millennials cite meaningful work as a priority.
Social Strategy - Open, transparent - our brains are wired for connection and this is why social media is so popular. Create rich strong relationships within the workplace.
To thrive in this social environment - where are they creating social connections and being transparent.
Strengths - what energizes me and what I’m good at doing. Understanding strengths to make connections and open.

Social Shareables
We spend too much time at work to not have some fun being there.
Literal notes while listening to the episode.
The goal of a mini-game is get your team focused on hitting the critical number. They also call them drivers.
Struggles implementing the great game - getting people excited about it, both management and staff. Finding time to do it.
No question, just the first steps to get started getting the whole team involved in the business of your organization:
Read the book
Pray/Meditate/Ponder if you’re ready and next steps
Search out others running the GGOB

Improve Your Bottom Line 20 Percent with OBM
David Burton, Part 2
David is a civic communication specialist for University of Missouri Extension and has responsibilities throughout the 17 counties of southwest Missouri. He is headquartered out of the Extension office in Springfield, Mo.
David is an award winning member of the extension as well as an award winning fiction writer.
In this episode David shares how the great game interacts with their annual business plan, how they’re in the black for the first time in 6 years, and how everyone is participating in the financial accountability of the Extension office.
Social Shareables from Part 2 with David Burton
One small (/sarc) effect of running the Great Game at the Extension - 1st time in 6 yrs in the black.
Another small (/sarc) effect of GGOB at the extension - Council members are engaged and understand the financials.
Effect of GGOB at the extension - Everyone on staff coming up with ways to save on expenses. New ideas on income generation bubbled up from inside.
Aha moment - many/most people don’t understand the financials and maybe timid to admit it. No shame. Start educating.
Learn how a nutrition specialist helped to reign in travel spending.
Literal Notes taken while listening to the episode:
How the great game interacts with their process of creating an annual Business Plan - Business Plan is a Blueprint of what they need/want to do. While the Great Game is more of “how” they will achieve the plan. How they will implement.
Just opening up the books and teaching the team the financials has shown, on average, a 20% improvement in your bottom line. You see more benefits if you’re able to provide an incentive.
Mutli-year team member after implementing GGOB - This is the first time I’ve really understood what these numbers mean and how I can impact them.
Chart - Know and teach the rules, follow the action and keep score, and provide a stake in the outcome, and the Critical Number at the convergence of these three.
Know and teach the rules - First, agree that you’re playing a “game” and that there is a score that measures the success of your organization. What numbers reflect success for your organization.
Follow the action and keep score - Everyone has a line item they’re responsible for tracking and projecting forward. They meet 30 minutes every week to cover the score. Creates a lot of interaction between team members.
Provide a stake in the outcome - can be as simple as having “dirt cake” after hitting a soil test threshold, to a larger “bonus” of development money if they hit the critical number at the end of the year.
Question:
How much would it help your organization if you admitted (if true) that there are elements of the financials you don’t understand? What if you started learning and then teaching on it?

David is an award winning member of the extension as well as an award winning fiction writer.
In part 1 of 3 episodes, David gets into what open book management is for a small government/non-profit/complicated organization like his, how the great game has changed the mindset of the team, and how they’ve overcome skepticism.
Social Shareables from part 1
Open Book Management is both a life preserver and a motor boat. It helped pull us out of the financial crisis and at the same time moving us forward.
Literal notes taken while listening to the show:
Open book management is also financial transparency, financial education, team-building, and a philosophy that gets people on the same page on decision making and strategic planning.
After open book management we’re not just thinking, “what’s in it for me?”.
Questions
Are you and your people thinking about the day-to-day habits that are costing your organization money and time?
The extension has a complicated mission, management structure, and funding process. If they’re able to use open book management, do you think your department or company could manage it?
Might there be skepticism in your organization to open book management working? What could help convince your team to buy-in?
At the end of this episode is a quick interview with Shawn Murphy, co-creator of The Rebel Leader Podcast. This is the first podcaster highlight i wanted to share with you. When addressing culture, it is an inside out approach. Leaders, look inside and then move out.
We all have superpowers and have an impact on those around us. Choose today how you will use them.
Is the way I show up
Is the way I talk to myself
Is the way I talk to other people
Is the way I take care for myself
Is the way I regard others
...helping me have the impact I want to have on the world? If, “no”, then there is beautiful work to be done there.
Showing up for yourself means you share the idea in a meeting when you normally wouldn’t share.
Make your next meeting more productive: make it shorter and make an agreement to have no phones in the meeting.
Questions for entrepreneurs, leaders, and managers
Do you believe you have superpowers? IE, do you truly believe you impact those around you with your attitude and energy?
How can you approach your next meeting with intention that will affect the energy of you and your team?

Welcome back, this is our last part with Cindy Stein, Greene County Missouri Auditor. She’ll talk about vision for the Great Game of Government and how everyone plays a role in determining the direction of their organizations, whether in government or business.
Social Media Shareables:
“My vision is that this would spread to all local, state and federal governments.”
“If someone believes in the mission, they can influence others, including leadership to join the cause of open-book management.”
“I would not be here talking with you if it weren’t for by Great Game Coach, Rhonda Alexander.”
Questions
Challenge:
If you’re in government or want to help your local government get a better handle on their/your finances, present this last series of episodes to them. I have no financial stake in the matter, perhaps you should give the Great Game a call to get some ideas going.

Right now, I’m hyper focused on increasing the number of subscribers to the show. This will help how this shows up on iTunes, making it easier for entrepreneurs, leaders in business and government find the show. There’s currently not a way to see how many subscribers are on iTunes, however, when we reach an average of 200 downloads per episode, I’ll have a drawing for book on this topic. Before we get started, I want to remind you of the drawing we’re having this week. (Of course many of you will be listening to this after the fact, sorry, it’s both the magic and curse of podcasting.) Anyway, James Lehman, my previous guest offered up an opportunity for one listener to take a free Energy Leadership Index Assessment and phone evaluation with James after he receives the results. I found out it has a value of $419. I am still accepting entries until midnight March 5th. Go to inspiredandintentional.com/energy to register for the drawing.
I’m excited to begin a new 3 part series with Cindy Stein.
Cindy S. Stein, Certified Public Accountant and a graduate from Missouri State University.
Cindy began her career with a local public accounting firm and remained there until her election to Greene County Auditor in 1994.
We’ll be talking with Cindy today about how the Great Game of Business is being implemented in the Greene County Government. Greene County is in Southwest Missouri, the largest town being Springfield. Many of you have heard of Branson, it’s just North of them.
Tweetables - “It’s about the employees and the foundation they have developed and the culture they help foster.”
“We’re not questioning the person. We’re questioning the number.”
Questions for part 1 with Cindy Stein.

I’ve been asking for reviews of the podcast. While this is still important, my new call to action for listeners and readers is subscribe to the podcast in iTunes or Stitcher. A couple weeks ago I mentioned that I would have a drawing when I reached 100 subscribers. This isn’t an easy number to get at this point. Instead, my critical number will be when my episodes average 100 downloads. Right now, they’re at 51. When they hit an average of 200, I’ll have a drawing for a book on this topic.

James Lehman, Award-Winning Author, Speaker, Workshop Leader, and a Life & Career Transition Coach, changes it up a bit and we discuss his book and what he’s focused on right now. It’s a slight diversion from the main topic of Inspired and Intentional business. However, it is about self management of your career which does align with employee accountability and engagement in their own career.
This 4th and first Thursday episode James will cover:
[powerpress]
Questions for this episode:
As a leader, how could you take the topics about career management and help your team take more command of their careers? Would this help your company?
If you’re undergoing a career transition, what could you do to take control over your career so you can find a place of meaning and purpose?
Perhaps coaching could help. With that in mind, James offered up an opportunity for one listener to take a free Energy Leadership assessment with an evaluation with James after he receives the results. I will accept entries during the next two weeks, from February 23rd to midnight March 5th. Go to inspiredandintentional.com/energy to register for the drawing.
Thank you so much for listening/reading and until next time, be inspired and intentional.
James K. Lehman is an Award-Winning Author, Speaker, Workshop Leader, and a Life & Career Transition Coach. After starting his career as a CPA, he transitioned into consulting, and then HR, focusing on HR Transformation.
James is the author of "Maneuvering Your Career - 20 Strategies to Prepare You for Voluntary (or Involuntary) Career Transition." He is a SPHR, a Certified Professional Coach, and Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner. He also serves on the International Association for Human Resource Information Management (IHRIM) Board of Directors .
Podcast worldview:
Gallup says 70% of US employees are disengaged from their work. This causes, what Ari Weinzweig calls an energy crisis in the workplace. Lost innovation, productivity and profits. Not to mention the tolls on the communities.
There are companies and organizations working to improve this. they are creating more open and collaborative work environments. They are realizing that treating people with dignity and providing meaningful work can be done while also running a financially solid organization.
My hope with this podcast is to inspire leaders, entrepreneurs, and those coming into leadership through transition, to make intentional choices to balance profit and social impact.

We conclude our conversation with Anne-Claire Broughton. She is Principal of Broughton Consulting, LLC, Durham, NC. Her many publications include the Business Action Guide Series of innovative employee engagement practices (with The Hitachi Foundation). Anne-Claire is active with efforts to educate retiring business owners and their advisors about the possibility of employee ownership as an exit strategy. She also shares innovative employee engagement practices to help business owners thrive. In addition, she is President of EarthShare North Carolina’s Board of Directors, an active amateur musician, and parent of a teenager.
Some of the insights we’ll hear:
Questions
Anne-Claire shares several practices of leaders who are running business differently:
Careful hiring
Extensive (intentional) training
Setting up career ladders/paths and promoting from within
Clearly communicating core values and using them as a guide to action
Smart incentive systems that align to the interests of the organization and the employees
Transparency and Open-Book management
Which one of these could you consider to begin using to move your organization forward?
Are you ready to consider your employees as a fixed cost vs a variable cost? If not what parts of this principle could you consider for your business?
How could you begin training your team on your culture?
What books will you assign to your team to read to begin the move forward?
Where’s your heart on this issue?
I would love to see your answers to these questions. You can leave them in the comments on this episodes page at inspiredandintentional.com/episode17, on Twitter @toddareed, LinkedIn @ToddAReed, or on Facebook, search for the Inspired and Intentional page.

Gallup reports 70% of employees are disengaged from their work. This leads to high and expensive turnover, poor productivity, and what Ari Weinzweig calls an energy crisis in the workplace. There are companies and organizations out there bucking this trend. By talking with these inspiring leaders, the goal of the Inspired and Intentional podcast is to help you know that you’re not alone. There are others that, not only, want to run a financially solid organization, but also one that intentionally inspires those on their team and in their community to significance and purpose.
